چکیده

The ichthyotoxic raphidophyte Heterosigma akashiwo is associated with harmful algal blooms (HABs). Although the influence of H. on fish has been reported, little known its effects other marine organisms, such as shellfish. In this study, physiological and transcriptomic responses Asiatic hard clam Meretrix meretrix to were investigated. results showed that survival was not influenced by (at a concentration 2 × 104 cells/mL), M. eliminated alga effectively after 48 h in co-culture. did alter antioxidant capacity clams. However, 544 unigenes found be differentially expressed between control akashiwo-treated Interestingly, significant up-regulation lysosome-related genes transport proteins suggested remodeling metabolism possibly for digestion akashiwo. summary, our indicate can feed akashiwo, intensification shellfish farming may helpful mitigate blooms.

Microsatellite marker analysis reveals the distinction between the north and south groups of hard clam (Meretrix meretrix) in China.

Meretrix meretrix is one of the important commercial bivalves in China. A total of 198 individual clams were collected from 5 locations characteristic of the clam's 5 main natural habitats in China, that is, Shandong, Jiangsu, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi. Ten polymorphic microsatellite markers were selected to examine the genetic diversity and identify genetic differences between the 5 popul...

Ionic and Amino Acid Regulation in Hard Clam (Meretrix lusoria) in Response to Salinity Challenges

Most marine mollusks are osmoconformers, in that, their body fluid osmolality changes in the direction of the change in environmental salinity. Marine mollusks exhibit a number of osmoregulatory mechanisms to cope with either hypo- or hyperosmotic stress. The effects of changes in salinity on the osmoregulatory mechanisms of the hard clam (Meretrix lusoria, an economically important species of ...

Behavioral and Physiological Changes during Benthic-Pelagic Transition in the Harmful Alga, Heterosigma akashiwo: Potential for Rapid Bloom Formation

Many species of harmful algae transition between a motile, vegetative stage in the water column and a non-motile, resting stage in the sediments. Physiological and behavioral traits expressed during benthic-pelagic transition potentially regulate the timing, location and persistence of blooms. The roles of key physiological and behavioral traits involved in resting cell emergence and bloom form...

Relating cell-level swimming behaviors to vertical population distributions in Heterosigma akashiwo (Raphidophyceae), a harmful alga

Cell motility may facilitate the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs) by enabling algal cells to swim to favorable microenvironments that support explosive growth. Motility also augments the formation of algal cell aggregations that are often associated with ecological and economic consequence. In this study, we used computerized video analysis to quantify cell-level swimming characteristic...
